Preben Terndrup Pedersen was a Professor in marine structures at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) from 1973 to 2010 and Head of Mechanical Engineering Faculty from 1992 to 2007. He has a PhD in solid mechanics from DTU, and has received a Dr. Honoris Causa from NTNU, Norway. He is a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
