Len Barbour completed his PhD in solid-state supramolecular chemistry under the guidance of Luigi Nassimbeni at the University of Cape Town. He then undertook a postdoctoral fellowship with Jerry Atwood at the University of Missouri – Columbia, where he continued to develop his interests in solid-state inclusion chemistry. In 2003 he was appointed as an Associate Professor at the University of Stellenbosch and in 2005 he was promoted to Professor. Two years later he was awarded a South African
